Toyota gets down in high-altitude Mexico
Toyota Gazoo Racing is banking on a deep-downforce package to give it a high-altitude edge when it resumes its World Endurance Championship (WEC) campaign in Mexico City this weekend.
The team expects conditions will better suit the characteristics of its Toyota TS050 Hybrid race cars during the Six Hours of Mexico at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, the fifth round of this year’s championship and the mid-point of the season.
Sitting at 2,285m above sea level, the thin air at this altitude calls for an ultra-high-downforce aerodynamic package to generate the right level of grip, and requires additional engine and hybrid system cooling measures to be used.
The team debuted a high-downforce aerodynamic package for its last start at the Nürburgring in July and has continued to develop it for the Mexico race.
Team president Toshio Sato said motorsport fans can expect impressive top speeds from the Toyota race cars, despite the use of high downforce.
“We want a strong performance and I believe we have the potential to achieve this,” Sato said.
Mike Conway, Stephane Sarrazin and Kamui Kobayashi in the No. 6 car will be looking to improve on their third place in the drivers’ championship.
Anthony Davidson, Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima will drive the No. 5 Toyota at the 4.3km track.
Although Toyota Gazoo Racing is making its debut at the venue, Toyota has raced there twice previously, with the 90C-V in 1989 and 1990.
Test and practice sessions will take place on Thursday, with final practice and qualifying on Friday. The race will start at 1:30pm local time on Saturday (4.30am AEST on Sunday).
